My First Ever Kids Trashion Show at Red Balloon Cafe!

I know I’m a photographer and most photographers don’t usually put on events that have NOTHING to do with photography. BUT I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again… That is not how I roll.

I freaking love doing things that are silly, bring out creativity in the world and allow people to have fun. So one day when I had the idea to have a Kids Trashion show, I knew I had to make that idea come to life!

If you have no idea what a Trashion show is let me help you out. Think Fashion show but all the clothing is made from recycled goods and all put together by a easy on the environment binding agent.

Way back in my corporate career (ew), I was in one of these myself. I made my outfit out of paper tissue and bags. It was insanely puffy and hard to walk in but I strutted my stuff in that like I was Lizzo on the VMA’s. In fact, I actually came out to the song Bangarang by Skrillex, perhaps a little to much for the Macy’s call center but it was amazing to me.

I also did my hair in this big puff/hawk fashion, strapped on my tallest heals- that I totally almost fell in- and loved every second of my short lived runway time.

This event though was for kids ages 3-11. I asked them all to create a outfit made out of recycled materials just like I did in mine and to get as creative with it as humanly possible.

Red Balloon Cafe partnered with me for this event and we used one of their class rooms for the kids to use as their runway. We even had some amazing prizes for them to win:

1st place:
Giftcard to Say Yes To Jess for a Dream Session value-$350
Giftcard to Picture This Clothing Value- $50 - Side note Check them out!! One of my favorite companies!
And an awesome Goodie Bag!

2nd place:

Giftcard to Target- $20
And an awesome Goodie Bag!

3rd place:

When it was finally time for the Trashion show, everyone got dressed and let me tell you these kids did not disappoint. Their outfits were amazing, and put my masterpiece above to shame. We even had a little girl who dressed her baby sister up to match her in the show.

It was such an amazing event and I want to thank everyone who helped during, and helped me set it all up. You all rock and I cannot wait to do this all again next year! <3

For all those wildly imaginative kids out there.

Remember that sweet little image I created early in January? It was of a little boy sitting on his bed looking out his window and there was a dinosaur looking back.

Cool concept right?

The thing I love most about this is it shows the real imagination that children have. When they play, this is what they see. They form giant ideas and play them out. To us, its pretend but to them it’s super real and amazing.

Imagine if we had the ability to take what was in our kids minds when they are playing and print it out and see it for ourselves.

Cincinnati Ohio Photographer creates Dreamy images from Children's imaginations

That would be incredible. You could get to know the way your child imagines, thinks and sees the world.

Fun story- That image I’m talking about is actually a creation from doing just that.

We sat down, talked about what was in the room, what it looked like, what kind of dinosaur would be in the window, what kind of pj’s he would be wearing and if it was day time or night time. So many little details all from the mind of a child.

I took those details and kept them on a little note next to me while I created a dreamy portrait of what was described to me. Basically putting what he sees into something tangible that we all can appreciate and his mom can hold close to her as he grows up and look back and remember those fun moments that he had as a kid.

When she showed him the photos when they were done, he looked up at her and said “This was yesterday right mommy?” because he really remembers this whole scene happening. Talk about the most adorable melt your heart moment.

So let me ask you this. Does your child have a crazy imagination? Do they always tell you about the adventures they go on? Do they love playing dress up and making up characters and people they are pretending to be?

If you answered yes to any one of these, I guarantee you have a little dreamer on your hands with an imagination that is exploding inside of their heads. Why not take the opportunity to see what their imagination really looks like. I promise it is an experience you won’t forget.
