Cake smash ideas

A Cake Smash Alternative You NEED To See!

We have all by now seen and love a good cake smash session for a one year old's birthday photos. It's adorable and such a fun thing to watch as it's happening. I mean babies covered in cake with huge smiles on their faces as they claw their way through it! Win win! Well till you have to clean them up I guess but that is a different story

A while ago an article surfaced about a little girl who used Tacos as alternative to cake for her photos and I absolutely loved it. When things like this pop up online, I always hope that someone will ask me to do a session like it, but you know... with my own personal ideas for it.

Well, i got my wish on this one!

A friend contacted me to start planning out her daughters 1 year photos for a classic session with a twist.  She had seen one of the very first Taco smashes that came to lite online early this year and wanted to do one for daughter too along with some more traditional styled images. I of course was on board and we began to plan out the look of the set.

We opted for not a lot of distractions when it came to decoration for the first backdrop we kept it simple to match the colors of the clothing and some banners in the back  for added flair. For the Taco Smash we decided to go with a Fiesta banner and a sombrero Pinata that way we could keep the focus more so on Bri, her daughter.

When doing Classic Sessions like this I don't like to photograph EVERYTHING on one backdrop or in the same location even so we opted to photograph 2 outfits inside and the 3rd we would take a quick drive over to the park. If you know me, you know I'm more of an outside natural light photographer anyway, so I'm always happy to take a trip to the park.

When the day came the weather was perfect and Bri was such a good little model.

And lastly, the TACO SMASH!

Unlike a cake smash it was not as messy and the cleanup for something like this was quite a bit easier. Also, oddly enough she was very clean about it and was picking up the little pieces and eating them first until we showed her i was ok to make a mess with it. All in all it was such a fun session and I can't wait to do another one like it.

Hooray for tacos!

Adult Cake Smash- How to smash a cake like a boss!

It has come to my attention that somethings may not seam as simple as you think they are. Those things that look like "oh, I got this"  then when you're in the moment you freeze up a little bit and are more like "I need instructions. I should have googled"

For example:
Adult Cake Smash Sessions.

Seems simple right?

Sit in front of cake. Eat cake with hands. Done deal.

Well, yes and no.

As adults (most of us) are used to eating things with a fork or spoon- spork if you're fancy. We stopped eating every food we come in contact with with our hands by at least age 5, give or take a couple years.  So when adult you is told to sit in front of a cake and eat it with your hands your brain is like ...

"Wait. you want me to what?
My hands are going to get dirty.
That looks slimy, I don't want to touch it.
ok fine. Just a little off the side nothing too serious."

Yeah, trust me it happens.  You're instantly overthinking the situation and your images are going to come out super tame- not the point of an adult cake smash session now is it? No.

So how do we fix that problem?

Simple.

Step 1.  Tap into your inner kid.

Yes, you're probably doing this for a birthday that is bigger than the age of 18. Meaning you are an adult. You have adult tendencies and do adult things- like eat with a fork.  Well toss it all out the window. Think back to the last time you saw a freshly new 1 year old rip into a cake for the first time.  What did they do? They wall all in. They went compleatly CRAY on that cake. Handful after handful of sweet sweet cake right into that kids mouth.

Step 2. Turn off the part of your brain that says "Don't touch that" .

Seriously, go ape shit on that cake! Go face first and make sure to get in there really good so it's all over your face when you come back up for air. Also, it's 100% ok to blow the icing out your noes to breath. I know from personal experience it will happen and breathing is important.

Step 3. Get into it.

The key to allowing your photographer to get some seriously amazing shots is to make sure you have handfuls of cake in your hands again, demolish the cake in front of you. Its acceptable... more so encouraged to make a face when you eat it too.  Remember, you are tapping into your inner kid who is super stoked about cake. Of course you're going to have some sort of weird/hilarious face going on when your in the moment.

Step 4. Let it happen.

Half way through the session your fingers are going to feel gross, Cake will 100% be all over your hands. You will feel sticky. You may even really be over eating the cake but keep going. The messier the better. The more moments worth photographing.

Now that you know the basics. I know you have got this covered.

Now get out there and cake smash like the boss I know you are!

P.s. It never hurts to bring along a friend/husband/family/coworker/stranger... along to participate in your fun!
