What do you think of when you think mermaid? Probably the kind you see sitting on a sandy beach somewhere, or the little mermaid. The "Cute" kind of mermaid.
When I think mermaid a couple different things come to mind: mysterious, beautiful and realistic- sometimes scary.
I've always wanted to do a mermaid session but if I was going to do one I didn't want it to be your typical style, I wanted to showcase an air of mystery and beauty that in my point of view mermaids should have. Not necessarily the "Disney" spin on it because let's get serious. Mermaids are kind of badass bitches!
To prepare for the session, I made a Shell top, Shell crown and a shimmery tail that looked more like scales than printed fabric and one that could also be easily put on during the session as I was pretty sure we would be hiking to our destination- and I was correct!
Our original spot we were going to shoot was Sharon Woods In Cincinnati Ohio. They have a couple waterfall areas there that looked like a perfect location. Not to deep of water but enough to put someone in. However, about 2 hours before the session started mother nature decided to let all hell break loose and shower our city with some crazy rain! When we pulled up to the location the water was basically White Water status. - not safe for merladies!
We ended up moving to French Park and found several beautiful spots in the woods with easily accessible mini falls. It really was the perfect place except for some bees that stung my assistant for the day. - Sorry Ellen!!! :(
I decided to go with two different "looks" Some images have Stephanie, our lovely mermaid wearing white contacts to showcase more so what something out of the ocean would look like and then some without.
All in all this was probably one of my favorite shoots and I can't wait to do more like it. One thing we did realize though when we were walking back is that none of us had ever seen a "Plus size" Mermaid. I want to set the record straight right this very moment.... YOU CAN BE A MERMAID NO MATTER WHAT SIZE YOU ARE!!
I hope you have enjoyed this look in on my first mermaid session and if you're interested in becoming a mermaid or have other ideas Please feel free to ask!
Till next time!
Xoxo - Jess
